Summary: There is substantial evidence of a connection between career development and mental health. Coping efficacy, psychological distress and family conflict, emotional and personality-oriented elements, and depression have all been associated with aspects of career development. Due to the complexity of career concerns, it is imperative for career practitioners to holistically support those they serve.
This webinar will contain information on the connection between career development and mental health, benefits and challenges of addressing this connection in various settings, and strategies for assessing and developing specific interventions to account for interconnected career and mental health concerns. Relevant research, case study analysis, and examples of effective strategies will be provided.

Bio: Dr. Seth C.W. Hayden Ph.D., LCMHC (NC), LPC (VA), CCMHC, NCC, CCCE, ACS is an associate professor of counseling and coordinator of the clinical mental health program at Wake Forest University. Dr. Hayden has provided career and personal counseling in community agencies, secondary school, and university settings. Dr. Hayden’s research focuses on the connection between career development and mental health as well as the career and personal development needs of military service members, veterans, and their families.
He is the co-author of two monographs (Group Career Counseling, Career Development for Transitioning Veterans) and co-authored 46 publications in such journals as the Career Development Quarterly and the Journal of Employment Counseling. He has also provided over 90 presentations at international, national, regional, and state conferences. In addition, he is the President of the National Career Development Association and past-president of the Military and Government Counseling Association.
Dr. Hayden earned a bachelor of arts in psychology, bachelor of science in education, and a master’s in counseling from the University of Memphis. He received his doctoral degree in counselor education from the University of Virginia. Dr. Hayden is a licensed clinical mental health counselor, a national certified counselor, a certified clinical mental health counselor, a certified career counselor educator, and an approved clinical supervisor.
