Using AI in Career Services: A Framework for Ethical Behavior

Description: Artificial intelligence (AI), primarily large language models are become more and more prevalent in career services as AI has become more capable. Since AI is still new to career development practitioners, it is imperative that practitioners be aware of the opportunities and pitfalls of AI programs and products.

To address the issue, the National Career Development Association convened an AI Task Force. One outgrowth of that group was the creation of the Framework for the Ethical and Effective Use of AI in Career Services. This course will review these ethical principles and provide the opportunity for career counselors and coaches to identify missteps and recognize proper ethical behavior. It will do this through videos, readings, activities, scenarios and a case study.

The course is pertinent to career counselors, career coaches, workforce development staff, rehabilitation counselors, school counselors, and any career services staff in an institution, or organization, business or in private practice.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the course you will be able to:

Recognize how artificial intelligence is transforming the labor market and hiring practices and apply this understanding to help clients make informed, future-oriented career decisions.
Evaluate the benefits and limitations of AI-based tools used in career services, including résumé scanners, job-matching platforms, and virtual advisors, to support ethical and personalized client guidance.
Identify key risks and challenges associated with AI in career development such as bias, lack of transparency, and data privacy.
Develop strategies to mitigate these AI risks in professional practice.
Apply the Framework for the Ethical and Effective Use of AI in Career Services to real life applications.
