Tell the Story, Land the Job: Applying Storytelling to Stand Out

Webinar Description: Knowing how to tell compelling stories isn’t just a critical skill when interviewing, it also helps the job seeker stimulate interest when networking and help others understand what they have to offer.

In job interviews, too many tell stories that fall flat—factual but forgettable.  They come across more as an educational documentary than a edge-of-your-seat murder mystery or thriller. In this practical and engaging webinar, career coaches will learn how to help clients bring stories to life by incorporating concrete details, moments of tension or dilemma, and insights into the client’s decision-making process.

We will also show how to “wrap a story in a SARI.” We will also look at how to take the basic SAR model of storytelling and add a game-changing component—an I for Insight. By adding insights—both process and takeaways—to their stories, your clients will not only help interviewers gain a clearer understanding of how they operate and unique ways they approach problems, these two types of insights also help make sure the messages your clients want to deliver get received.

By the end of the session, you’ll know how to guide clients in crafting “Teaching Stories” that go beyond merely describing what happened to showcasing how they think, act, and add value. These are the stories that spark deeper conversations, differentiate candidates from the crowd, and elicit responses like, “Wow—we could really use that here.”

Learning Objectives:

  • Upgrade Client Storytelling Skills: Learn how to guide clients in going beyond STAR to the SARI model, helping them tell richer, more insightful stories in interviews and networking conversations.
  • Reveal Thought Process and Values: Teach clients how to embed strategic insights into their stories, revealing how they think, make decisions, and solve problems in ways that build trust and interest.
  • Make Stories Memorable and Impactful: Learn how to coach clients to add narrative tension, vivid detail, and clear takeaways so their stories are easier to follow, more engaging, and highly memorable.
